Flintshire
is a relatively small county with an area of 437 sq km (169 sq miles),
sandwiched between Denbighshire in Wales and Cheshire in England. The
county is largely low-lying, but the Clwydian Range of mountains rises
to the west, Moel Famau reaching a height of 556 m (1,820 feet) on the
border with Denbighshire.

There
are many prehistoric remains in Flintshire, and the Romans conquered the
area in the 2nd century AD. After the departure of the Romans in about
400 AD, the region witnessed extensive conflict between the Welsh and
the English. When Offa's Dyke was constructed in the 8th century as a
defence for the English Kingdom of Mercia against the Welsh, the territory
that is now Flintshire was on the Mercian side of the dyke. The Normans
arrived in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, but it was not until
the end of the 13th century that Edward I of England finally subdued the
Welsh.

Coal
mining and textiles where mainstays of the economy, but they have now
been replaced by service industries, engineering, light manufacturing
and tourism. There are many castles to visit in the area, including the
ruins of Flint Castle and Ewloe Castle. The Clwydian Range is a designated
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the Loggerheads Country Park near
Mold, comprising 28 hectares (70 acres) of parkland, is noted for the
richness of its birdlife.
