County Town: Paisley
County Population: 265,000 (estimate)
Renfrewshire lies between the county of Ayrshire and the Clyde River, with the City of Glasgow at its eastern border. Along the banks of the Clyde the land is low-lying, but to the southwest it rises to hills that have many peaks over 457 m (1,500 feet) in height.
The banks of the Clyde used to be dotted with textile mills that were powered by its waters, and the town of Paisley is best known for the 'Paisley shawls' produced there during the 19th century.
About 50% of the land is in agricultural use, with the hills to the southwest used for sheep and dairy farming. Glasgow has rapidly grown over the centuries and many towns to the east of Renfrewshire now form a continuous built-up area around the city. Walkers, hikers and birdwatchers frequent the upland areas of the county, and the west coast is home to a wide range of birdlife.
