County Town: Lanark
County Population: N/A
To the north of Lanarkshire the land is mainly low-lying, but to the south of the county lie the Scottish Uplands, and to the east the Pentland Hills, both of which often exceed 600 m (1,970 feet) in height. The River Clyde rises in the hills near Abington and flows through the Clyde valley, or Clydesdale, toward Glasgow in the northwest.
North-western Lanarkshire is urbanised and quite industrial, with many towns acting as dormitory suburbs for nearby Glasgow. The south and east of Lanarkshire is more rural with much of the county in agricultural use. Clydesdale is particularly noted for its horticulture and orchards, and south-eastern Lanarkshire features many scenic valleys and picturesque walks.
