County Town: Haddington
County Population: 86,000 (estimate)
The Lammermuir Hills run across the south of East Lothian, rising to a high point of 528 m (1,733 feet) at Lammer Law, 12km (8 miles) south of Haddington. The hills give way in the north to a broad coastal plain covered in fertile deposits of clay that support a rich agricultural tradition.
Prestonpans, on the coast northwest of Tranent, is best known for three historic battles fought there, including the 'Battle of Pinkie' when the English routed the Scottish, 'Carberry Hill' when Mary Queen of Scots surrendered, and 'Prestonpans', where in 1745 the forces of Prince Charles Edward Stuart routed the army of General Cope in just 15 minutes.
Nearly 90% of the land is used for agriculture, there are many pleasant seaside resorts and fishing ports along the coast of East Lothian, and the scenic Lammermuir Hills in the south are ideal for walking and hiking.
