| County
Town: Alloa County Population: 49,000 (estimate) |
Known
as the 'Wee County', Clackmannanshire only occupies an area of about 160
sq km (62 sq miles). The county's landscape is dominated by the steep-sided
Ochil Hills in the north, with many deep-cut glens running southeast to
join the lowlands bordering the Firth of Forth.
The
fast-running streams that flow down the glens to join the Devon, the main
river of Clackmannanshire, provided the power that in the 18th century
turned the local production of wool textiles from a cottage industry into
one of the major focuses of Scotland's textile industry.
Three
quarters of the county is given over to agricultural, and much of the
land is part of the wooded Trossachs National Park, a popular tourist
destination. The main town of Alloa is known for its textile production,
including plaids, tartans, and tweeds, but is also a centre for brewing
and glass making.
