County Town: Dornoch
County Population: 40,000 (estimate)
Sutherlandshire lies at the northern end of the North West Highlands, a mountain range that dominates northwest Scotland with peaks of up to 1,177 m (3,680 feet) above sea level. The county is rugged, sparsely populated and its deep valleys and high mountains are covered with moorland and deer forests.
The region contains many remnants of early Pictish occupation and was under Norse rule until the 11th century. The massive Loch Shin lies at its centre, and is the base for the most northerly hydroelectric scheme on mainland Scotland. In 1975 Sutherlandshire became part of the newly created Highland Region, a much larger county that stretches south through Ross & Cromarty to Argyllshire, southeast to Moray and Aberdeenshire, and northeast to Caithness.
Sutherlandshire has a deeply indented coastline, and as a result of glaciation during the last ice age there are many large valleys carved into the landscape, much of which remains unspoilt by modern development. Forestry and cattle farming are mainstays of the economy, with tourists being drawn by the beautiful coastline and wild mountainous scenery.
