County Town: Dingwall
County Population: 50,000 (estimate)
Ross and Cromarty lies in northwest Scotland. Bounded by Sutherlandshire to the north and Inverness-shire to the south, the islands of Skye and Raasay can be found off the southwest coast. The county lies toward the north of the North West Highlands, a mountain range that dominates northwest Scotland with peaks of up to 1,177 m (3,680) feet above sea level. The county is rugged, sparsely populated and its deep valleys and high mountains are covered with moorland and deer forests.
Picts were the early inhabitants of the area, followed by the Norse. The county of Ross was constituted in 1661, Cromarty between 1685 and 1698, and in 1889 the counties were amalgamated. Following government reorganisation in 1975 Ross and Cromarty became part of the newly created Highland Region, a much larger county that stretches south through Inverness-shire to Argyllshire, east to Moray and Aberdeenshire, and northeast to Caithness.
Ross & Cromarty has a deeply indented coastline, and as a result of glaciation during the last ice age there are many large valleys carved into the landscape, much of which remains unspoilt by modern development. Forestry and cattle farming are mainstays of the economy, with tourists being drawn by the beautiful coastline and wild mountainous scenery.
