Part
of the Inner Hebrides, Coll covers an area of approximately 60 sq km (24
sq miles) and lies roughly 10 km (6 miles) northwest of the Island of
Mull. Hilly, with much pleasant scenery, the island is about 20 km (13
miles) in length, featuring an indented coastline of rocky outcrops and
sandy bays.

|
Celtic
and Iron Age remains have been located on the island, and during the 8th
century Vikings invaded the Hebrides, as a result of which Norway ruled
the island chain until 1266, when they were transferred to Scottish control.
During the next few centuries Scottish chieftains ruled the islands, Coll
being historically associated with the Clan MacLean, but the royal house
of Scotland gradually reduced the influence of the chieftains, gaining
full control over the Hebrides in 1748.
