Main Town: Rothesay
Island Population: 9,000 (estimate)
Bute is separated from mainland Scotland by the Kyles of Bute to the north and the Firth of Clyde to the east. The county of Argyllshire and the heavily wooded Trossachs National Park lie less than 1km (½ mile) off its north coast, and the larger island of Arran is southwest of Bute.
With a total area of approximately 119 sq km (46 sq miles) the island is split in two by Loch Fad and Loch Quien, which cut diagonally across it. To the north the terrain is high, rocky, and barren, reaching a height of 277 m (909 feet). In the centre and south it is low and undulating and comparatively fertile, covered in cereal crops.
Fishing and tourism are the leading industries, with points of interest including the remains of prehistoric structures, many early Christian churches and the ruins of the 14th century Rothesay Castle. Walking, angling and bird watching are some of the main tourist activities.
