Main Town: Brodick
Island Population: 4,900 (estimate)
Arran lies in the Firth of Clyde approximately 20km (13 miles) off the coast of Ayrshire to the east, and is separated from Argyllshire in the west by a narrow straight called the Kilbrannan Sound, about 7km (4 miles) wide.
With an area of about 433 sq km (170 sq miles) the island is mountainous, reaching a maximum elevation of 874 m (2,866 feet). Arran is renowned for its beautiful glens, picturesque waterfalls and the wild and rugged breakers of the northern shore that attract both geologists and tourists.
The islands economy is based on traditional occupations such as fishing and farming, with tourism playing an important role. Places of interest include a ruined castle on the north of the island, and caves in the southwest where the liberator of Scotland, Robert Bruce, is believed to have taken refuge from the English in 1307.
