County Town: Perth
County Population: 100,000 (estimate)
Perthshire occupies a roughly circular area in central Scotland. The majority of the county is mountainous, much of it lying in the Scottish Highlands, with several peaks above 700 m (2,300 feet). The mountainous region gives way to a strip of lower undulating fertile land that runs across the southeast corner of the county, and the Trossachs National Park covers much of the southwest.
It was occupied in early times by the Picts, and there are numerous relics of Roman occupation in the county. In the 8th century Scone, just northeast of Perth, became the capital of the Picts, and by the 12th century Perth itself had become the royal seat, a distinction it held until 1437.
The county is heavily forested and features some rich vegetation, something that attracts many walkers, hikers and birdwatchers. The Breadalbane mountain range is part of the National Nature Reserve, with rare alpine plants growing on its slopes and many bird species, such as the buzzard, kestrel, grouse, and golden plover to be seen.
