County Town: Stonehaven
County Population: N/A
Kincardineshire lies between the counties of Aberdeenshire to the north and Angus to the southwest. Facing the North Sea, the county has a strip of rich fertile land along the coast, which rises to undulating uplands and into the extremes of the Scottish Highlands to the far north and west.
The Picts were early inhabitants of Kincardineshire, and traces of Roman occupation are also found in the area. Just over 2km (1 mile) south of Stonehaven is Dunnottar Castle, the most spectacular ruin on Scotland's North Sea coast, and the last Scottish fortress to hold out against Oliver Cromwell's troops in the mid-17th century.
Kincardineshire features some lovely scenery. The upland areas are excellent for walking, hiking and observing wildlife and birds, and the area has some great fresh and saltwater fishing.
