The largest county in Scotland, Inverness-shire is dominated by the Scottish
Highlands, and cut diagonally in two from the southwest to the northeast
by the Great Glen, a vast geological fault containing the lochs Ness,
Oich, and Lochy, which are all joined by the Caledonian Canal.
|
||||||
|
The
landscape is mountainous, largely forested and strewn with lochs. Ben
Nevis, standing at 1,343 m (4,406 feet) is the highest mountain in the
United Kingdom, located to the south east of the Great Glen, and the lovely
Glenmore Forest Park (FP) lies just to the southeast of Aviemore.

|
The
county is one of moorland, deer forests, scenic valleys, beautiful lochs
and rich wildlife; much visited by walkers, hikers, climbers, and in winter
skiers. The City of Inverness also has a prosperous tourist industry,
the Pictish capital in the 6th century, by the 12th century Inverness
was a thriving trading community, and is now the most important city in
northern Scotland.
