County Town: Banff
County Population: N/A
Banffshire is a long thin county that stretches diagonally southwest to northeast, Moray to its west and Aberdeenshire to its east. Undulating lowland runs along the coast, but the northern end of the Scottish Highlands protrude into the south of the county.
The area was first occupied in prehistoric times by the Picts, and suffered from Norse invasions during the 10th and 11th centuries. The county contains the ruins of several medieval castles, and during the 16th century the region remained largely Roman Catholic after the Reformation, and suffered greatly in the ensuing struggles.
Much of the land is given over to agriculture along the coast, with forests and moorland covering the mountainous regions to the south. The unspoilt landscape offers a wide variety of wildlife and some very scenic walks.
