Argyllshire has a stunning topography and landscape. The Scottish Highlands dominate the county, as does the Trossachs National Park, which covers the area from the far south all the way up to Loch Linnhe, which cuts off part of the county in the northwest. The coastline is deeply indented with numerous small islands, both sea and fresh water lochs, steep valleys, narrow coastlines and inland forest and heather covered hilltops.
The county is inundated with steep valleys and inlets that cut into the landscape in a northeasterly direction. The county is approximately 175 km (109 miles) long from north to south, and the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre is only about 20 km (12 miles) northeast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland.
Due to the county's deeply indented coastline and mountainous topography it is unsuitable for cultivation and sparsely populated. The magnificent unspoilt beauty of the mountains, lochs and coastline are major tourist attractions, and the area has a wealth of wildlife.
